Insurance FAQ

Plain-English answers to the questions people actually ask — from a real local independent agent serving Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska & Tennessee. Don't see yours? Call or text 573-594-5148 or ask Lucy any time.

Getting started

What is an independent insurance agent?

A captive agent sells one company's policies; an independent agent represents many carriers and shops your risk across the market to bring you options. You get choice and a real person who works for you, not the carrier.

How do I get a quote?

Three ways: start online, call or text 573-594-5148, or ask Lucy (our 24/7 assistant) by phone or chat. Many simple lines can be compared and bought the same day.

Is a quote the same as coverage?

No. A quote is an estimated price based on the info provided; coverage exists only once a carrier issues the policy. We'll tell you exactly what's needed to bind.

Why use a local agent instead of a 1-800 number?

A local independent agent knows your area, shops multiple carriers for your best fit, and is in your corner at claim time — not just at the sale. No call-center menu.

How much does insurance cost?

It depends on you — your coverage, location, history, and the carrier. That's exactly why we shop your risk across many companies instead of quoting one. Tell us what you need and we'll find the most competitive real option. Call or text 573-594-5148.

Can I bundle my home and auto to save money?

Usually yes — most carriers give a multi-policy discount when you keep home and auto together, and bundling often raises your umbrella eligibility too. As an independent agency we can compare bundled vs. separate across carriers and show you which actually saves more.

What areas do you serve?

BNW Services LLC is a licensed independent agency based in Vandalia, Missouri, writing in Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. If you're in those states, we can help.

Are you a real licensed insurance agency?

Yes. BNW Services LLC is a licensed independent insurance agency (agent of record Billy W.), appointed with dozens of carriers. We're not a lead-broker — you work directly with a licensed agent.

Auto insurance

What does comprehensive car insurance cover?

Damage to your vehicle that isn't a collision — theft, hail, wind, fire, flood, falling objects, hitting an animal, and vandalism. Hitting another car or object is collision, a separate coverage.

What is a collision deductible?

The amount you pay out of pocket on a collision claim before insurance covers the rest. A higher deductible lowers your premium; just keep it to an amount you could actually pay after a wreck.

Does my auto policy cover a rental car?

Usually your personal policy's coverage extends to a rental for personal use — but only what you already carry, and business use is often excluded. International rentals typically aren't covered. Worth a quick check before you decline the counter coverage.

How much does it cost to add a teenager to my policy?

Adding a young driver raises premiums because of risk, but the increase varies a lot by carrier, the car they drive, and discounts (good-student, driver-training, telematics). As an independent agent we can shop it to soften the hit — get a quote for your real number.

Why did my car insurance rate go up without a claim?

Often it's the carrier's overall pricing in your area, not anything you did — plus factors like vehicle repair costs and local claims trends. When that happens, let us re-shop it across carriers; the same driver can pay very different prices.

What does "full coverage" car insurance actually mean?

There's no official 'full coverage' product — it usually means liability plus comprehensive and collision. It does not mean every possible coverage; gaps like rental reimbursement, roadside, or higher limits are separate. We'll show you exactly what your policy includes.

What are split limits in auto insurance?

Split limits show three numbers (e.g., 100/300/100): per-person bodily injury, per-accident bodily injury, and property damage. They cap what the policy pays in each category. Higher limits protect your assets better if you're at fault in a serious crash.

Do I need proof of insurance to register my car?

In most states, yes — you need active coverage to register and to drive legally. We can get you covered fast and provide proof the same day.

What is gap insurance and do I need it?

Gap insurance pays the difference between what you owe on a financed/leased vehicle and what it's worth if it's totaled — since cars depreciate faster than the loan balance. If you're upside-down on a loan, it's worth it.

Does car insurance cover hitting a deer?

Yes — hitting an animal is covered under comprehensive (not collision), minus your deductible. Common in the Midwest, so it's a good reason to carry comprehensive.

Can I drive a new car home from the dealer without insurance?

Generally no — you need coverage in force before you drive off, and most dealers require proof. If you already have an auto policy, many carriers extend coverage to a newly purchased vehicle for a short grace period, but you must add it promptly. Call us before you buy and we'll have you covered.

Does full coverage auto insurance cover repairs?

It covers repairs from a covered loss — a collision, or comprehensive events like hail, theft, or hitting a deer — minus your deductible. It does not cover normal wear, maintenance, or mechanical breakdown; that's what a separate mechanical/warranty product is for.

What is an SR-22 and can you file one?

An SR-22 isn't insurance — it's a form your carrier files with the state to prove you carry the required liability after certain violations. We work with carriers that handle SR-22 filings; call us and we'll place you with one that fits.

Can I add my partner to my car insurance if we live together?

Usually yes — most carriers want all licensed drivers in the household listed, and a resident partner can typically be added. It can even help or hurt the rate depending on their record, so it's worth comparing. We can run it both ways.

Does my auto insurance follow me in a rental moving truck?

Not always — personal auto policies often exclude large box/moving trucks. Coverage for a rental moving truck usually comes from the rental company's protection products. Check with us before you rent so there's no gap.

Home & property

What does homeowners insurance NOT cover?

Common exclusions are flood, earthquake, sewer/drain backup, normal wear and maintenance, and limits on high-value items — most need a separate policy or endorsement. We review your policy for these gaps before you need them.

Are burst pipes covered by homeowners insurance?

Usually yes if it's sudden and accidental — the water damage to floors, walls, and belongings. It can be denied if the pipe froze from neglect (no heat) or from a long-term leak. Sewer/sump backup is separate and needs its own endorsement.

What affects the cost of homeowners insurance?

Your home's age and roof, its rebuild cost (not market value), location and weather risk, your coverage limits and deductible, and claims history. Two similar homes can price very differently — the fix is shopping carriers.

Does having a dog affect home insurance?

It can — some carriers restrict or surcharge certain breeds due to liability, and others don't. As an independent agent we can place you with a carrier that fits your situation.

Can I switch home insurance companies anytime?

Yes — you're not locked in. You can switch mid-term (you'll get a refund of unused premium) or at renewal. As an independent agent we make it painless and shop the market for a better fit.

How can I lower my homeowners insurance?

Bundle home and auto, raise your deductible, keep the roof and home maintained, add protective devices, and re-shop carriers periodically. We'll find the levers that fit your home without gutting your coverage.

What's the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value?

Replacement cost pays to rebuild/replace at today's prices; actual cash value subtracts depreciation. Replacement cost costs a bit more but pays far better after a loss — we'll make sure you know which you have.

What is a personal umbrella policy?

An umbrella adds an extra layer of liability protection above your home and auto limits — for when a claim exceeds them. It's inexpensive for the protection it provides, especially if you have assets to protect.

Does homeowners insurance cover dog bites?

Usually yes — dog bites (to a person, and in many cases injuries your dog causes to someone else's pet) fall under the personal liability part of your homeowners policy. But it varies: some carriers restrict certain breeds or limit animal liability. We'll check your policy and place you with a carrier that actually covers it.

What is dwelling coverage on a homeowners policy?

Dwelling (Coverage A) pays to repair or rebuild the physical structure of your home after a covered loss. It should reflect the cost to rebuild, not your market value or mortgage balance. We help you set it so you're not under-insured at claim time.

Do I need flood insurance?

Standard home and renters policies do NOT cover flood — it's a separate policy. If you're in or near a flood zone, or just want the protection, we can write flood coverage. Even low-risk areas flood, so it's worth a look.

Does homeowners insurance cover roof damage?

Typically yes when the damage is sudden and accidental — wind, hail, a fallen tree — minus your deductible. Damage from age, wear, or neglect usually isn't covered, and some policies pay roofs at actual cash value rather than replacement cost. We'll explain how your specific policy treats the roof.

What is loss of use coverage?

If a covered loss makes your home unlivable, loss of use (additional living expense) helps pay for temporary housing, meals, and related costs while it's repaired. It's an often-overlooked but valuable part of a home or renters policy.

Does homeowners insurance cover a business run from home?

Usually only in a very limited way — most home policies cap or exclude business property and liability. If you run a business from home, you likely need a business policy or an endorsement. We can pair the right home + business coverage so you're not exposed.

Renters

Do I need renters insurance?

If you rent, yes — your landlord's policy covers the building, not your belongings or your liability. Renters insurance is usually inexpensive and can often be bought online in minutes.

Does renters insurance cover guests?

Your liability coverage can help if a guest is injured in your home, and your belongings are covered against covered perils — but a guest's own property generally isn't. Ask us about the specifics for your policy.

How much renters insurance should I buy?

Enough to replace your belongings (do a rough inventory) plus liability protection — a common starting point is enough personal-property coverage to cover your stuff and a solid liability limit. We'll right-size it with you.

Does renters insurance cover water damage?

It can cover sudden water damage to your belongings (like a burst pipe), but not flooding from outside — that needs flood insurance. Sewer backup is also separate. We'll make sure you understand what's included.

Life insurance

How much life insurance do I need?

Add up income replacement, debts (mortgage, loans), final expenses, and future goals (college, a spouse's retirement gap), then subtract what you already have. The gap is roughly your number.

What's the difference between term and whole life?

Term covers a set period (10-30 years) and is the most affordable protection per dollar; whole life never expires and builds cash value but costs more. Many families start with term, and some add a small whole life for final expenses.

Does life insurance cover funeral expenses?

Yes — the death benefit can be used for funeral and final expenses, and some smaller 'final expense' policies are designed specifically for that purpose.

Is life insurance taxable?

A life insurance death benefit is generally income-tax-free to your beneficiaries. Some situations (large estates, interest paid, or transfers) can have tax implications — we'll flag if that applies and point you to a tax pro.

What is an irrevocable beneficiary?

An irrevocable beneficiary can't be removed or changed without their consent — unlike a revocable beneficiary, which you can change anytime. It's used in specific situations like divorce agreements.

Can I have more than one life insurance policy?

Yes — many people layer policies (e.g., a large term policy plus a smaller permanent one) to match different needs. Total coverage just needs to be justifiable by your income and obligations.

What is "evidence of insurability"?

It's proof you qualify for coverage — typically a health questionnaire and sometimes a medical exam. Some smaller or guaranteed-issue policies skip it, usually at a higher cost.

Can creditors take life insurance money after death?

When you name a living person as beneficiary, the death benefit generally passes directly to them and is protected from the deceased's creditors. If the beneficiary is your estate (or none is named), it can be exposed. Naming beneficiaries correctly matters — we'll help you set it up right.

Is the cash value of life insurance taxable?

The death benefit is generally income-tax-free to your beneficiary. Cash value grows tax-deferred; you're typically only taxed if you withdraw or surrender more than what you paid in. Specifics depend on the policy and your situation, so confirm with a tax advisor — we'll explain the coverage side.

Can veterans get life insurance?

Absolutely — veterans can qualify for private life insurance just like anyone else, in addition to any VA benefits. We can shop term and whole life across carriers to find the best fit for your health and budget.

Do I need a medical exam to get life insurance?

Not always. Many carriers offer no-exam (simplified or accelerated underwriting) policies, especially at lower face amounts or younger ages. Larger policies may still need an exam for the best rate. We'll match you to the path that fits.

What happens to my term life policy when the term ends?

When the level term ends, coverage usually either expires or continues at a much higher annual rate. Many term policies include a conversion option to switch to permanent coverage without a new medical exam — a valuable feature we look for when placing your policy.

Business & specialty

What is a Business Owners Policy (BOP)?

A BOP bundles general liability and commercial property into one cost-effective package for small businesses — the common starting point. We can add commercial auto, workers' comp, and more as you grow.

Can you cover hard-to-place or specialty risks?

Often yes — vacant property, builder's risk, dwelling fire, commercial auto/trucking, farm, crop, and other risks the 1-800 sites turn away are exactly what an independent agency with surplus-lines access can shop.

Do you write farm and crop insurance?

Yes — farm, ranch, and crop coverage are part of what we write across Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska.

Do I need workers' comp insurance?

Most states require it once you have employees — it covers medical bills and lost wages for on-the-job injuries and protects you from related lawsuits. We write it across our commercial carriers.

What is commercial auto insurance and do I need it?

If vehicles are used for your business, your personal auto policy likely excludes that use — commercial auto covers it with higher limits. Contractors, trucking, and anyone driving for work need it.

What is general liability insurance?

General liability (GL) protects your business if you're held responsible for bodily injury or property damage to others — a customer slips, you damage a client's property. It's the foundation of most business coverage and is often required by contracts and landlords. We write GL across many carriers.

What is professional liability or E&O insurance?

Errors & omissions (E&O), or professional liability, covers claims that your professional advice or service caused a client financial harm. If you're paid for your expertise — consulting, real estate, salon services, design — it's the coverage general liability doesn't include.

Do I need a surety bond, and can you write one?

Many trades and licenses require a surety bond — a guarantee you'll meet an obligation (a contractor license bond, for example). It's different from insurance. Yes, we can place surety and license bonds; tell us what your license or contract requires.

What is inland marine or tool coverage for contractors?

Inland marine covers your tools and equipment while they move between job sites — something a standard property policy often won't. For contractors, it protects the gear you can't work without if it's stolen or damaged. We bundle it with your contractor package.

What is builders risk insurance?

Builders risk covers a structure while it's under construction or renovation — protecting materials and work-in-progress against fire, theft, wind, and more until the project is complete. If you're building, it's the coverage that fills the gap before a permanent policy applies.

Claims & service

I was just in an accident — how do I start a claim?

If anyone's hurt, call 911 first. Then, when safe, document the scene (photos, the other driver's info) and call us at 573-594-5148 — we'll help you open the claim with your carrier and walk you through what's next. See our claims page for the full steps.

How do I check the status of my claim?

Give us a call at 573-594-5148 and we'll help you check with the carrier, or you can use your carrier's claims portal. As your agent, we advocate for you through the process.

Can I change my coverage or update my details?

Yes — call or text 573-594-5148 and we'll make the change with your carrier (coverage updates, address, vehicles, drivers). It's quick when a real agent handles it.

Will filing a claim raise my rates?

It depends — an at-fault or large claim can affect your rate at renewal; a small or not-at-fault claim may not. We can help you weigh whether a small claim is even worth filing before you do.

Will my rate go up after a claim that wasn't my fault?

Often not for a clearly not-at-fault claim, and many carriers offer accident forgiveness — but it varies by carrier and state. If a claim does affect your rate, that's a great time to let us re-shop the market for you.

How long do I have to file an insurance claim?

File as soon as reasonably possible — prompt reporting protects your claim. Policies and states set outer time limits, but waiting can complicate things. If something happened, contact us or your carrier right away and we'll guide you.

Billing & payments

How can I make a payment?

Agency payments can be made by card or bank/ACH through our secure pay link; carrier premium payments go through your carrier's portal. Call us if you're not sure which applies.

When is my next premium payment due?

Payment due dates are set by your carrier — give us a call at 573-594-5148 and we'll look it up or point you to the carrier portal.

What payment methods do you accept?

Agency payments can be made by card or bank/ACH through our secure link; carrier premium payments go through your carrier's portal (monthly, EFT, or pay-in-full). Call us if you're unsure which applies to you.

Can I pay my premium monthly?

Most carriers offer monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual payment plans; paying in full often earns a discount. We'll show you the options so you can pick what fits your cash flow.

What happens if I miss an insurance payment?

Carriers send a notice and a grace period before any cancellation — but a lapse can raise your future rates or leave you uncovered. If you're at risk of missing one, call us right away; we can often help you avoid a lapse.

Trucking & commercial auto

Do you write trucking insurance?

Yes — we cover owner-operators and motor carriers, including primary liability, physical damage, and the filings carriers require. Whether you run local or long-haul, we shop trucking markets to find a real rate. Call 573-594-5148.

What is motor truck cargo insurance?

Motor truck cargo covers the freight you're hauling against loss or damage in transit. Most shippers and brokers require it, and the right limit depends on what you carry. We'll match the coverage to your loads.

What is non-trucking liability (bobtail) coverage?

Non-trucking liability covers you when you're driving the truck for personal use — not under dispatch. It fills the gap when your motor carrier's policy doesn't apply. We can explain how it fits with your operation.

Specialty & recreational

Do you insure boats and watercraft?

Yes — we write watercraft coverage for boats, including liability, physical damage, and on-water towing. Coverage and rate depend on the boat, motor, and how you use it. We'll shop it across carriers.

Do you insure motorcycles?

Yes. Motorcycle policies can cover liability, collision, comprehensive, custom parts, and gear. We compare carriers so riders get real protection without overpaying — and bundling with auto often helps.

Do you cover classic or collector cars?

Yes — collector vehicles often use agreed-value policies that pay the value you and the carrier set, not depreciated cash value. If you have a classic, antique, or collector car, we can place specialty coverage built for it.

Do you insure drones?

Yes — we write drone (UAS) coverage including liability and hull/physical damage, for hobby and commercial operators. If you fly for business, clients often require proof of coverage. We can help you meet it.

Health insurance

Do you offer health insurance?

We're sorry — we're not a licensed health insurance agent in Missouri, Kansas, or Nebraska, so we can't quote or advise on health, Medicare, or marketplace plans. We do specialize in auto, home, renters, life, farm, and business insurance — we'd be glad to help with any of those.

Can you help with Medicare or a marketplace health plan?

Not at this time — health and Medicare aren't lines we're licensed for. For those, you'd want a licensed health/Medicare broker. For auto, home, life, farm, or business, we're here for you.

Ready when you are.
