# Auto Repair Shop Insurance: Garage & Garagekeepers Coverage

An auto repair shop faces a risk most businesses never do: you take temporary custody of other people's valuable, drivable property. If a customer's car is stolen off your lot, damaged in a test drive, or dented by a lift failure, that's your responsibility — and standard business policies don't cover it. Auto repair shops need specialized "garage" coverages built for exactly this exposure.

At BNW Services / InsureToday24, we're an independent agency licensed across Missouri, Kansas, and our broader region, appointed with 69+ carriers. We shop repair-shop accounts across insurers that write the garage class. Here's what a shop needs and why.

The coverages an auto repair shop should carry

1. Garagekeepers liability (the one that makes this trade unique)

Garagekeepers covers damage to a customer's vehicle while it's in your care, custody, and control — theft off the lot, fire, weather, vandalism, or damage during service or a test drive. This is the defining coverage for repair shops and it isn't part of an ordinary business policy. Know the difference: garage liability covers injury and damage *your business operations* cause to others, while garagekeepers covers *the customers' cars you're holding*. You typically need both.

2. General liability / garage liability

Covers bodily injury and property damage to customers and the public on your premises — a slip in the waiting area or a customer hurt in the shop. See General Liability Insurance.

3. Commercial property + equipment

Your building, lifts, diagnostic equipment, tools, and parts inventory need commercial property coverage. Many shops bundle property and liability into a Business Owners Policy (BOP), then add the garage coverages.

4. Workers' compensation

Techs work around lifts, hot exhaust, chemicals, and heavy parts — crush injuries, burns, and strains are common. If you have employees, workers' comp is generally required and pays their medical and lost wages. OSHA sets standards for automotive service hazards. See Workers' Compensation Insurance.

5. Pollution / environmental

Shops store oil, solvents, coolant, and waste. Standard policies often exclude pollution; ask us about coverage for spills and cleanup — the EPA regulates used-oil and hazardous-waste handling.

6. Commercial auto and umbrella

If the shop owns tow trucks, loaners, or parts-runner vehicles, it needs commercial auto. A commercial umbrella adds catastrophic limits.

Common auto repair claims and risks

How an independent agency shops it

Garage coverage is specialized, and carriers vary in how they price shops by services offered, number of bays, tow operations, and lot security. As an independent agency we place your shop with a carrier that writes the class and make sure garagekeepers is written correctly (and on the right basis — legal liability vs. direct primary). That's the advantage of an independent agent over buying direct.

What it costs

Premiums reflect services offered, revenue, number of vehicles in custody, tow operations, payroll, claims history, and limits. The SBA recommends matching coverage to exposure first, then shopping price.
