# Church & Nonprofit Insurance: Coverage for Congregations & Charities
A church or nonprofit looks nothing like a for-profit shop, but it faces the same core risks and a few of its own: a building open to the public, volunteers and staff, donated property, events, board members making decisions, and — for organizations that work with children or vulnerable people — real abuse exposure. Church and nonprofit insurance packages these coverages so a single incident doesn't drain the organization's resources.
At BNW Services / InsureToday24, we're an independent agency licensed across Missouri, Kansas, and our broader region, appointed with 69+ carriers. We shop houses of worship and nonprofit accounts across insurers that specialize in the class. Here's what these organizations need and why.
The coverages a church or nonprofit should carry
1. General liability
General liability covers bodily injury and property damage to members, visitors, and the public — a slip on the front steps, an injury at an event, damage you cause off-site. The Insurance Information Institute lists general liability as the most common commercial policy. See General Liability Insurance.
2. Commercial property
The sanctuary, hall, offices, contents, sound and A/V equipment, and any donated or historic property need commercial property coverage against fire, storm, water, theft, and vandalism. Many organizations bundle property and liability into a package or Business Owners Policy (BOP).
3. Directors & officers (D&O) liability
Board members and officers can be sued personally over governance decisions — employment matters, financial oversight, or a disputed decision. D&O liability protects the organization and the individuals who volunteer to lead it, and is often what convinces good board members to serve. It's a form of management/professional liability.
4. Abuse & molestation coverage
Any organization serving children, youth, or vulnerable adults — Sunday school, daycare, camps, shelters — needs abuse & molestation coverage, which standard liability policies often exclude. It's one of the most important and most overlooked coverages for a congregation or charity.
5. Workers' compensation
If you have paid clergy, staff, or employees, workers' comp is generally required and pays for job-related injuries. See Workers' Compensation Insurance.
6. Commercial auto and umbrella
Vans and buses used for ministry or program transportation need commercial auto, and non-owned/hired auto covers volunteers driving for the organization. A commercial umbrella adds catastrophic limits over the underlying liability policies.
Common church & nonprofit claims and risks
- Slip-and-fall on steps, in parking lots, and at events.
- Property loss — fire, storm, water, theft, and vandalism.
- Abuse & molestation allegations in youth or vulnerable-population programs.
- D&O claims over governance, employment, or financial decisions.
- Auto claims involving vans, buses, or volunteer drivers.
- Volunteer and employee injury. OSHA sets general workplace safety standards.
How an independent agency shops it
Faith-based and nonprofit appetite depends on activities, programs, occupancy, transportation, and whether children or vulnerable adults are served. As an independent agency we match your organization to a carrier that understands ministries and nonprofits and confirm the abuse, D&O, and volunteer-driver gaps are closed — the advantage of an independent agent over buying direct. We also issue certificates of insurance for facility rentals and events.
What it costs
Premiums reflect building values, membership/activity level, programs, payroll, transportation, claims history, and limits. The SBA recommends matching coverage to exposure first, then shopping price.
