# FAQ: Life and Commercial Insurance
Life insurance protects your family. Commercial insurance protects your livelihood. Both can feel complicated, so we put the questions Missouri and Kansas households and small-business owners ask us most into one place. BNW Services LLC, dba InsureToday24, is a licensed independent agency, which means we shop across the 69-plus carriers we represent to match your situation — not steer you to one company's product. Have a question that isn't here? Call or text Lucy, our AI receptionist, at (573) 594-5148, or start at insuretoday24.com.
Life Insurance
What's the difference between term and whole life?
Term life covers you for a set number of years — often 10, 20, or 30 — and pays a death benefit if you pass during that window. Whole life lasts your entire life and builds cash value over time, but costs more per dollar of coverage. Term is the lower-cost choice for most young families; whole and other permanent policies fit estate, business, or lifelong-need planning. We quote life and annuity products through BackNine.
How much life insurance do I actually need?
A common starting point is replacing several years of income plus paying off debts like a mortgage and covering future costs such as childcare or college. There's no one-size answer — a single homeowner has different needs than a parent of three. We'll walk through your numbers with you, and the III (iii.org) offers worksheets to help you estimate.
Will I have to take a medical exam?
It depends on the product, your age, and the coverage amount. Some policies are fully underwritten and may require an exam or medical records; others are simplified or guaranteed-issue with health questions only. Underwriting determines your rate class — the III explains how this works at iii.org.
Is the death benefit taxable to my family?
Generally, life insurance death benefits paid to a named beneficiary are not subject to federal income tax. There can be exceptions involving large estates or how the policy is owned. Tax rules come from the IRS (irs.gov), so confirm specifics with a tax professional.
What is an annuity, and is it the same as life insurance?
No. An annuity is a contract designed to provide income, often in retirement, rather than a death benefit. Some are fixed, some are indexed, and they carry their own terms and tax treatment per the IRS. We offer annuities through BackNine and will explain the tradeoffs in plain English before you commit.
What happens to my policy if my insurance company fails?
Each state has a guaranty association that provides a backstop, up to statutory limits, if a licensed life insurer becomes insolvent. Missouri and Kansas both participate. You can learn more through the NAIC (naic.org), which coordinates state guaranty associations nationwide.
Commercial Insurance
I run a small business in Missouri — what coverage do I need first?
Most small businesses start with general liability, which covers third-party bodily injury and property damage claims. Many bundle that with property coverage in a Business Owner's Policy (BOP). If you have employees, workers' compensation is typically required. We'll review your operations and shop the commercial carriers we represent to build the right mix.
Is workers' compensation required in Missouri and Kansas?
In most cases, yes, once you reach a certain number of employees, though thresholds and exemptions differ by state and industry. Missouri rules are administered by the Missouri Department of Commerce & Insurance (insurance.mo.gov) and the state's labor division; Kansas requirements run through the Kansas Insurance Department (insurance.kansas.gov) and its workers' comp authorities. Tell us your headcount and trade, and we'll confirm what applies to you.
What's a BOP, and is it cheaper than buying coverage separately?
A Business Owner's Policy bundles general liability and commercial property into one package, often at a better rate than separate policies. BOPs suit many shops, offices, and service businesses, but they don't fit every risk. We'll tell you honestly whether a BOP or a stand-alone program serves you better.
Do I need commercial auto if I use my personal truck for work?
Often, yes. Personal auto policies may exclude or limit business use, leaving a dangerous gap. If vehicles are central to your work — deliveries, hauling, client visits — commercial auto is usually the right call. We'll review how the vehicle is used and titled before recommending coverage.
What is a Certificate of Insurance, and can you provide one?
A COI is a one-page proof that your business carries active coverage — general contractors, landlords, and clients frequently require it before you can start a job. Yes, we can issue certificates for the commercial policies we place. Just let Lucy know who needs it and what limits they require.
Does general liability cover my professional advice or mistakes?
No. General liability covers physical injury and property damage, not errors in professional services. For that, you'd look at professional liability, sometimes called errors & omissions. If your work involves advice, design, or specialized services, ask us whether you need it.
Can an independent agency really save me money on business insurance?
That's the core advantage. Because we're independent, we compare the commercial carriers we represent rather than fitting you into one company's box. That competition often means better pricing and broader appetite for trades and specialty risks across Missouri and Kansas. The NAIC and your state departments confirm that independent agents must be licensed to place your coverage.
