# FAQ: Umbrella and Personal Liability Insurance

Most people insure their car and home and stop there — but a single serious lawsuit can blow past those policy limits fast. That's what an umbrella policy is for: an extra layer of liability protection that sits above your other coverage. It's one of the most affordable ways to protect what you've built. BNW Services LLC (dba InsureToday24) writes personal umbrella coverage across Missouri, Kansas, and our broader region. Here are the questions we hear most. Have another? What is umbrella insurance, exactly?

An umbrella policy provides liability coverage above and beyond the limits of your existing auto, home, and other policies. If a covered liability claim exceeds your primary policy's limit, the umbrella can pick up where that policy leaves off, up to the umbrella's limit. It can also cover some claims your base policies might not. Think of it as a safety net stretched over your whole liability picture. Start with Personal Umbrella Insurance.

How is umbrella different from the liability already on my auto and home?

Your auto and home policies each include liability coverage, but only up to their limits. Once a judgment or settlement exceeds those limits, you're personally on the hook for the rest — your savings, your assets, even future income. An umbrella extends the ceiling. It doesn't replace your auto or home liability; it stacks on top of it. To understand base limits, see Understanding Deductibles, Limits and Coverage.

Do I really need one if I'm "just a regular person"?

You might be surprised. Liability risk isn't only for the wealthy. A serious at-fault car accident, a dog bite, a guest injured at your home, or a teen driver's mistake can all generate claims larger than a standard policy covers. If you own a home, have savings, drive, or have assets or future earnings worth protecting, an umbrella is worth pricing. It's often surprisingly inexpensive for the amount of protection.

How much umbrella coverage do I need?

A common rule of thumb is to carry enough umbrella coverage to protect your net worth — and some people go higher to protect future income. The right number depends on your assets, your exposures (pools, teen drivers, rental property, recreational vehicles), and your comfort level. As an independent agency, we'll help you size it and compare the carriers we represent.

What does umbrella insurance typically cover?

Umbrella policies generally extend coverage for things like bodily injury and property damage you're liable for, and often certain personal-injury claims (such as libel or slander) beyond what base policies include. Exactly what's covered — and any exclusions — depends on the policy, so we'll walk you through the specifics before you buy.

What doesn't it cover?

An umbrella is liability coverage — it doesn't pay to repair your own car or home (that's what your primary property coverage is for), and it doesn't cover your business liability unless it's a commercial umbrella built for that. It also won't cover intentional or criminal acts. If you run a business, ask us about a commercial umbrella instead.

Do I need to have my auto and home with BNW to get an umbrella?

Carriers usually require you to carry certain minimum liability limits on your underlying auto and home policies before they'll add an umbrella. Keeping those policies with us makes it simple to coordinate, and bundling can help. See Bundling Policies: How Multi-Policy Discounts Save You Money.

Does an umbrella help protect against big lawsuits for my rental or farm?

It can. Landlords and farm/ranch owners often have extra exposure — tenants, visitors, equipment, livestock — that makes an umbrella especially valuable. For farm-specific questions, see FAQ: Farm, Ranch, and Crop Insurance.

Is umbrella coverage expensive?

Relative to the protection it provides, umbrella coverage is often one of the best values in insurance — a large amount of liability protection for a modest premium, because the underlying policies absorb the first layer of claims. We'll show you real numbers when we quote.

How do I add an umbrella policy?

It's quick. Have your current auto and home policy details handy so we can confirm your underlying limits. Call or text (573) 594-5148 or start at insuretoday24.com, and a licensed agent will size it and quote the carriers we represent.
