# Retail Store Insurance: Coverage for Shops & Storefronts

A retail store's biggest risks are the two things it can't operate without: the customers who walk in and the inventory on the shelves. A shopper slips and falls, a fire or burst pipe destroys your stock, a thief cleans out the register, or a product you sold injures someone. Retail insurance protects both the people in your store and the property that makes you money.

At BNW Services / InsureToday24, we're an independent agency licensed across Missouri, Kansas, and our broader region, appointed with 69+ carriers. We shop retail accounts across insurers that price storefronts competitively. Here's what a shop needs and why.

The coverages a retail store should carry

1. General liability

General liability covers bodily injury and property damage to customers and the public — most commonly a slip-and-fall in your store, but also product liability if something you sold causes harm. Landlords require it before leasing you retail space. The Insurance Information Institute lists general liability as the most common commercial policy. See General Liability Insurance.

2. Commercial property + inventory

Your build-out, fixtures, equipment, and — crucially — your inventory need commercial property coverage against fire, water, theft, and vandalism. For most shops the smartest buy is a Business Owners Policy (BOP), which bundles property and liability, usually at a discount.

3. Business income (interruption)

If a fire or covered loss shuts you down, business income coverage (built into most BOPs) replaces lost revenue while you rebuild — often the difference between reopening and closing for good.

4. Crime / theft coverage

Retail is a theft target. Coverage for burglary, robbery, and employee dishonesty protects cash and merchandise beyond what basic property coverage includes.

5. Workers' compensation

If you have employees, workers' comp is generally required and pays for on-the-job injuries — lifting strains, falls, and slips. See Workers' Compensation Insurance.

6. Cyber liability (if you take cards)

Any store processing card payments holds customer data. Cyber liability coverage responds to a breach — a real exposure the FTC emphasizes for small businesses that handle payment data.

Common retail claims and risks

How an independent agency shops it

Retail is a broad class, and carriers price it by what you sell, your location, security, and sales volume. As an independent agency we match your shop to the carrier whose appetite fits — the advantage of an independent agent over buying direct — and make sure your property limit actually reflects your inventory value so you're not underinsured.

What it costs

Premiums reflect square footage, sales, what you sell, location and security, payroll, claims history, and limits. The SBA recommends matching coverage to exposure first, then shopping price.
