# How to File a Complaint with Your State Insurance Department

Most insurance interactions go smoothly. But when they don't — a claim you believe was handled unfairly, a rate change you can't get explained, an agent who won't return your call — you are not powerless. Every state has an insurance department whose job includes helping consumers, free of charge. At BNW Services LLC (dba InsureToday24), we'd rather you never need this page, but you deserve to know the door is there. Here's how the complaint process works.

First, Try to Resolve It Directly

A formal complaint is a real tool, but it's usually not the fastest first step. Before filing, it often helps to:

1. Call your agent. If BNW placed your coverage, call us at (573) 594-5148. As your independent agent, we can often untangle a misunderstanding, push for a fair review, or explain what's actually happening. This is exactly the advocacy role we describe in How to Start a Claim with BNW Services.

2. Contact the carrier. Since the carrier — not the agency — pays claims and sets terms, its claims or customer-service line is often where an issue gets resolved.

3. Keep records. Note dates, names, and what was said. Save letters, emails, and your policy documents.

If direct contact doesn't resolve it, the state department is your next step — and it's free.

What the State Department Can Do

State insurance departments review consumer complaints and can intervene with carriers and agents on your behalf. They can look into whether a company followed the law and its own policy terms, help get you an explanation you couldn't obtain yourself, and take action against a company or agent that violated the rules. They coordinate nationally through the NAIC, which also maintains consumer resources. Departments generally cannot act as your personal attorney or force a payout on a genuinely disputed coverage question — but they can make sure the process was fair and lawful.

Where to File, by State

You file with the department in the state where your policy was written or where you live. Across BNW's footprint, the authoritative sources are:

Each department's website has a consumer-complaint section, usually with an online form and often a phone line for help.

What You'll Need to File

Complaint processes vary a little by state, but you'll generally want to have ready:

Stick to the facts and attach your documentation. A clear, well-organized complaint is easier for the department to act on.

After You File

The department typically acknowledges your complaint and contacts the company for a response, then reviews whether things were handled properly. Timelines vary. You may be asked for more information, so stay responsive and keep copies of everything.

How BNW Fits In

Filing a complaint against a carrier does not put you on bad terms with your agency — we're on your side of the table. If you're frustrated with how a carrier handled something, tell us. We can often help before it gets to a formal complaint, and if a complaint is warranted, we'll help you understand where to file. Because we're independent, if the relationship with a carrier has soured, we can also re-shop the carriers we represent at renewal.
